A computer engineering student recently approached me with inquiries about the various career paths available in the tech field. They were particularly interested in knowing if there was a faster route to becoming a tech exec compared to others.
One common path involves climbing the corporate ladder within a larger company. Typically, this entails starting in an entry-level technical role and gradually progressing to more senior positions, such as a software engineer or project manager. This route may involve taking on more risk and necessitates a strong drive and determination to succeed, but it can accelerate the path to a tech exec role.
For those interested in blending tech work with tech exec responsibilities, becoming a technical or software architect may be an ideal path. These roles involve both hands-on technical work and overseeing the overall technical strategy and direction of projects. By taking on these responsibilities, individuals can stay connected to the latest technologies while also honing their leadership and management skills.
A higher education degree, like an MBA or master’s in computer science, is an option for gaining a comprehensive understanding of both the technical and business aspects of the tech industry, positioning individuals for success in a tech exec role.
